BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA – Cocoa police patrol officers rescued an elderly male after he mistakenly drove onto the railroad tracks at State Road 520 and U.S. Hwy. 1 moments before two trains were approaching from opposite directions.
At approximately 10 p.m. on Thursday, patrol officers responded to the intersection of State Road 520, where they found the driver of the vehicle attempting to get his car off the tracks.
Communications officers made preemptive calls to the Florida East Coast Railway to slow and stop incoming trains as officers successfully kept the elderly driver off the tracks and away from his vehicle to ensure his safety.
According to a Cocoa police spokesperson, two incoming trains stopped just short of the intersection from both directions, and once secured, a wrecker was called to remove the vehicle from the tracks.
After approximately one hour, the scene was cleared and the trains resumed normal operations without incident.
Because of the seriousness of the situation, officers felt it necessary to issue citations for an improper turn, resulting in the vehicle getting stuck on the tracks.
“Patrol officers continue their proactive efforts to educate the public about the dangers and legal consequences of stopping on railroad tracks,” said a Cocoa police spokesperson. “This includes increased enforcement and the issuance of citations and warnings to violators to enhance public safety.”
