OREM, UTAH – Authorities have arrested a 22-year-old man suspected of carrying out the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk during a speaking event at Utah Valley University earlier this week.
Officials confirmed that Tyler Robinson of St. George, Utah, was taken into custody Friday after his father recognized him in photographs released by investigators.
According to law enforcement, Robinson initially resisted turning himself in but eventually complied following conversations with his father and a youth pastor, who also serves as a U.S. Marshals task force officer.
Gov. Spencer Cox, speaking at a press conference Friday, revealed that Robinson had become increasingly political in recent years and had discussed Kirk’s campus appearance with a relative the night before the shooting.
Cox also disclosed details about bullet casings found at the scene, which were engraved with political slogans and taunts.
Investigators say Robinson arrived at the UVU campus in a gray Dodge Challenger, the same vehicle spotted near the shooting site. Authorities linked him to the attack through digital messages obtained from his roommate, which referenced stashing a rifle in a bush, switching outfits, and engraving ammunition.
The FBI and state investigators recovered the suspected murder weapon—an older model Mauser .30-06 bolt-action rifle—wrapped in a towel and abandoned in a wooded area close to campus. Forensic experts at the FBI’s Quantico laboratory are analyzing the firearm, ammunition, and other evidence, including a palm print and shoe impressions left at the scene.
Surveillance video released Thursday showed the shooter climbing onto a university rooftop, firing a single fatal shot into a crowd of roughly 3,000 people, and then fleeing by jumping down from the building and escaping into a nearby neighborhood.
FBI Director Kash Patel praised the speed of the investigation, noting that Robinson was apprehended within 33 hours of the killing and that agents were on scene within 16 minutes of the shooting.
“This remains an active and ongoing investigation,” Patel said, stressing that more evidence will be shared with state and federal prosecutors.
Authorities received more than 7,000 public tips and conducted over 200 interviews before Robinson’s arrest. Investigators believe the suspect carefully planned the attack, citing his proficiency with a high-powered rifle and his knowledge of the campus layout.
Kirk, 31, the founder of conservative youth organization Turning Point USA, was struck and killed by a single shot while addressing the crowd. His death has drawn national attention, with political leaders—including President Donald Trump—condemning the act as a “political assassination.”
Robinson remains in custody as prosecutors prepare charges.
