STARLITE WAS AMONG MERRITT ISLAND’S MOST POPULAR SOCIAL SCENES FOR DECADES

BREVARD COUNTY • MERRITT ISLAND, FLORIDA — For more than three decades, the Starlite Skate Center was one of the brightest fixtures of Brevard County’s social scene, drawing in thousands of residents who laced up their skates, glided under dazzling lights, and bonded over the music of their generation.

From its beginnings in the 1960s until its decline in the late 1990s, the rink was far more than just a recreational facility—it was a community gathering place, a cultural touchstone, and for many, the backdrop of their most treasured teenage memories.

Before it became a skating landmark, the building on Merritt Island was home to “Atlantis,” a concert hall active during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Atlantis hosted a variety of live music events, setting the stage—literally—for what would later become a venue steeped in rhythm and motion.

By the mid-1970s, as roller skating surged in popularity across the nation, the space was transformed into the Starlite Skate Center, aligning itself with a cultural wave that blended sport, dance, and music into one.

The Golden Years: 1970s–1980s

In the disco-fueled 1970s, Starlite was at its peak. Families brought their children for weekend fun, teenagers met up for Friday night skates, and couples often treated the rink as a first-date destination. Under glowing disco balls and multicolored lights, skaters circled the floor to the beat of hits from the Bee Gees, Donna Summer, and later, the high-energy rock and pop of the 1980s.

By the mid-1980s, skating had become a defining part of youth culture, and Starlite was at the heart of it.

DJs spun the latest tracks off the Billboard Top 40 while managing themed nights that kept the crowds coming back. Some nights featured couples-only skates, where the lights dimmed low for a more romantic feel. Others were geared toward kids and families, with contests, limbo games, and races across the polished rink floor.

“Everyone went there—it didn’t matter if you were a skater or not,” recalled longtime Merritt Island resident Linda Hernandez. “It was the place to see your friends, meet new people, and feel like you were part of something. It was our safe haven.”

As the 1990s arrived, roller skating nationwide began to lose its grip on youth culture. Video games, shopping malls, and later, the internet, began to compete for attention. To keep up, the rink changed its name twice—first to “Colorz” and later to “Island Skate Center.”

Each rebrand brought updates to the facility, new murals, and attempts to modernize the experience, but attendance continued to wane.

Despite efforts to attract new crowds, by the late 1990s, the rink was no longer able to sustain itself. Like many other rinks across the country, Starlite fell victim to changing times and closed its doors, leaving behind echoes of laughter, music, and wheels gliding across hardwood floors.

Today, the once-vibrant skating rink stands quiet. Its spacious floor and concession areas now sit mostly empty. While the neon signs and disco lights have long since disappeared, faint remnants of the rink remain on the walls—ghosts of an era when the building pulsed with life.

But Starlite’s story is far from forgotten. Former patrons continue to share memories, photographs, and even reunion invitations on the “Star Lite Skate Center Alumni” Facebook page.

For many, the rink represents a rite of passage, a place where friendships were forged, first loves blossomed, and generations of Space Coast residents came together for carefree nights on wheels.

“Starlite may be gone, but it’s still alive in our hearts,” said Merritt Island native Jeff Morrison, who skated at the rink every Friday throughout the 1980s. “Every time I hear certain songs on the radio, I’m back on that floor with my friends, spinning under the lights.”

Though the building now serves a different purpose, its legacy as a community hub is firmly embedded in local history. Much like drive-in theaters and old movie houses, skating rinks like Starlite offered more than just entertainment—they created shared experiences that shaped a generation.

For Brevard County, the Starlite Skate Center stands as a reminder of a time when music, movement, and togetherness defined the youth culture of the Space Coast. And while the skates are long packed away, the memories continue to roll on.
