Space Coast Honor Flight Marks First Direct Flight from Melbourne with Veterans’ Monument Tour
BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA — Space Coast Honor Flight marked a historic milestone Saturday with its first-ever trip departing directly from Melbourne Orlando International Airport (MLB) to Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.
The mission brought 48 local veterans to Washington, D.C., for a daylong tribute at the nation’s most revered military memorials — and concluded with a powerful homecoming celebration attended by hundreds of supporters.
The chartered Allegiant Air flight replaced the organization’s previous commercial departures out of Orlando, reducing travel time and easing the experience for the aging veterans.
The return was nothing short of remarkable: a “Walk of Honor” through Melbourne’s terminal, where community members waved flags, held posters, and offered thunderous applause in a corridor of gratitude. Families with children joined veterans’ groups and Brevard residents, creating an atmosphere of respect and celebration.
The group of veterans, who served during World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam, and later conflicts, spent the day touring national landmarks.
Their itinerary included visits to the World War II Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial, Military Women’s Memorial, and the U.S. Air Force Memorial.
They also witnessed the solemn Changing of the Guard ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery’s Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Among the travelers was 95-year-old Seymour “Sy” Weinlauf, a former military policeman in the New York Army National Guard who once marched in President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s inauguration parade. Also making the journey was 93-year-old C.P. “Cid” Pietromartire, who served as a U.S. Army radio operator in Korea during the early 1950s.

Space Coast Honor Flight, part of a nationwide nonprofit network, has transported more than 2,000 veterans to Washington, D.C., since its founding. Each mission offers participants a day of reflection, remembrance, and honor — and the community a chance to show gratitude for their service.
“Moving to Melbourne Orlando International Airport reduces travel time, makes the journey easier for our veterans, and allows for greater community involvement,” said retired U.S. Navy Rear Admiral James Hart, CEO of Space Coast Honor Flight.
In May, the Melbourne Airport Authority announced it would host three Honor Flights in 2025, waiving all airport fees in support of the program. Allegiant Air operates the chartered flights.
“It is an honor and distinct pleasure to work with Space Coast Honor Flight,” said Greg Donovan, executive director of Melbourne Orlando International Airport. “This organization is self-funded, and we encourage the community to support this cause.”
Melbourne Airport Authority Board Chairman William Potter echoed the sentiment, adding: “We thank everyone for working so diligently on this important endeavor.”
Two additional Space Coast Honor Flights are scheduled for October 11 and November 8.
The organization, part of a nationwide network of Honor Flights, continues its mission of honoring veterans by providing them with the opportunity to visit the memorials dedicated to their service and sacrifice.
