Child Hospitalized After Vehicle Crash at Wickham and Lake Washington Roads

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA — A child was airlifted to the hospital on Wednesday afternoon after a crash involving an electric dirt bike and a van at the intersection of Wickham Road and Lake Washington Road, according to the Melbourne Police Department.
Police said officers were called to the scene around 4:17 p.m. following reports of a collision between a 2001 Chrysler van and an electric dirt bike.
The young rider of the dirt bike sustained serious injuries and was transported by air to Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children for treatment.
A landing zone was established at a nearby golf course to facilitate the emergency transport.
According to an initial investigation, the electric dirt bike had been traveling west on Lake Washington Road when the Chrysler van, exiting a parking lot at the northwest corner of the intersection, attempted to turn east onto Lake Washington.
The van reportedly pulled into the path of the dirt bike, resulting in a collision on the driver’s side of the vehicle.
Police said all involved parties have been accounted for, and alcohol or drugs do not appear to be factors in the crash.
The Melbourne Police Department’s Traffic Enforcement Unit is leading the investigation, which remains active.
