BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Florida Department of Transportation has activated two new Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons on US-192 at West New Haven Avenue and SR-500 in Melbourne and West Melbourne to improve safety for pedestrians and bicyclists.

New PHB locations:

• Bry Lynn Drive
• Palm Boulevard

These signals are designed to help pedestrians cross safely while increasing driver awareness at crosswalks.

Coming soon

Three additional PHBs will be activated along the US-192 corridor between I-95 and Babcock Street at:

• Pearl Street / Circle Drive
• Haven Drive / Campbell Drive
• Wawa Way

These upgrades are part of a larger FDOT safety project aimed at improving traffic operations and reducing crashes along US-192 through:

• Safer pedestrian crossings
• Upgraded traffic signals
• Improved access management
• Bicycle accommodations

The Florida Department of Transportation has activated two new Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons on U.S. 192 at West New Haven Avenue and S.R. 500 in Melbourne and West Melbourne to improve safety for pedestrians and bicyclists.

How a PHB works:

  1. The signal stays dark until a pedestrian pushes the button.
  2. Drivers see flashing yellow, then solid yellow — slow down and prepare to stop.
  3. A solid red signal means STOP and allow pedestrians to cross.
  4. A flashing red signal means drivers may proceed with caution once the crosswalk is clear.

Drivers please stay alert and use extra care as everyone adjusts to the new signals. Learn more about PHBs HERE.
