Utility Improvements Aim to Strengthen Wastewater Service Despite Road Closures

BREVARD COUNTY • MERRITT ISLAND, FLORIDA — Residents and motorists on Merritt Island should prepare for temporary traffic disruptions as Brevard County Utility Services begins a major wastewater infrastructure improvement project next week.
County officials announced that construction is scheduled to start Monday, Feb. 16, to replace and relocate Lift Station C-17 near the intersection of North Courtenay Parkway and Catalina Isles Drive.
The work will require the temporary closure of Catalina Isles Drive from North Courtenay Parkway to just east of the existing lift station.
During construction, motorists can expect traffic pattern changes in the area, including partial northbound lane closures on North Courtenay Parkway, temporary road closures along Catalina Isles Drive, and clearly marked detour routes.
County officials also advise drivers and cyclists to remain alert to construction vehicles and equipment, as well as temporary bicycle lane closures.
Despite the disruptions, access to all residential and commercial driveways will be maintained throughout the project.

The $5.8 million improvement project is designed to enhance the reliability of the county’s wastewater system, reduce the risk of future service interruptions, and strengthen service for the surrounding Merritt Island community.
In addition to constructing a new lift station near the current facility, crews will install new underground sewer piping along North Courtenay Parkway and Catalina Isles Drive.
The existing lift station will be safely decommissioned, and all affected roadways, landscaping, and disturbed areas will be fully restored upon completion of construction.
The project is expected to conclude in December, though officials note that schedules may change due to weather or other unforeseen factors.
Brevard County Utility Services thanked residents and commuters for their patience, emphasizing that the temporary inconveniences are necessary to complete critical infrastructure upgrades that will benefit the community for years to come.
