The Federal Trade Commission is calling on Americans to share their experiences and opinions regarding rental housing fees as it considers whether new regulations are needed to prevent unfair or deceptive practices.

The request, announced by the agency’s Bureau of Consumer Protection staff, aims to better understand how fees are being applied across the rental market.

Officials say the effort is focused on issues many renters may find familiar, including unexpected charges that are not clearly disclosed in advertised rent prices.

At the same time, property owners, managers, and others working in the housing industry are being encouraged to weigh in with data and insights about how clearer rules could impact business operations and competition.

The FTC will use the public’s feedback to assess how common questionable fee practices may be, evaluate the potential benefits or drawbacks of new regulations, and explore alternative approaches if needed.

The goal is to determine whether a formal rule could improve transparency and create a more level playing field across the rental housing market.

The agency has set a deadline of April 13, for submitting comments, which can be provided online or in writing.
