Spring Sports Season is in full swing

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Space Coast Spring Sports seasons are underway as baseball and softball teams are taking shape, girls beach volleyball and flag football have found their footing, track and field, lacrosse, and tennis are all underway.
Zane Garcia of Space Coast Daily and the FNLR team highlights some teams that have emerged as the county’s best through the young season.
BASEBALL

When it comes to baseball, there are a few teams that are the “usual suspects” of the better teams across the Space Coast.
Merritt Island currently sits at 11-0 and is ranked at no. 7 in the state of Florida. They are at a dominating pace, beating opponents by over an average of five runs a game.
So far, nobody in the county has been able to give them a run for their money, but a couple of other squads have looked good so far.
Melbourne has put together an 8-2 season so far with their only big loss coming to Merritt Island, regardless of that loss the Bulldogs have played solid baseball and even swept their rivals Eau Gallie this season. Merritt Island and Melbourne will face off again on March 20 in Melbourne.
Viera is 10-1 and ranked in the top 25 in Florida. The Hawks are trying to follow up on a successful season a year ago, when they almost reached the state semifinals. We will not get to see a Viera and Merritt Island matchup this year, which would be a sight to see, but both squads are trending in the right direction.
SOFTBALL

Melbourne and Eau Gallie have once again been two of the County’s top teams, but there are a few others that have quietly been overlooked.
Melbourne is undefeated at 6-0 and the no. 8 team in the state of Florida; they have comfortably beaten every opponent other than their matchup at Eau Gallie, which went to nine innings. This week, the Bulldogs will play four straight games, two against in-county teams and two against out-of-county teams.
Currently 5-1, with two shutouts, the Astronaut War Eagles have been an overlooked team across Brevard County this season. Their one loss was a narrow 2-1 defeat to Cornerstone Charter, who is currently 8-0 and the no. 16 teams in the state.
The Eau Gallie softball team, year in and year out, has competed as one of the better teams in the county, and this season is no different. At 6-1 and ranked no. 27 in the state, the Lady Commodores are looking to continue their success and make a run at state this season.
TENNIS
As usual, the Edgewood tennis team has been dominant this season. They are currently 10-0 and are not turning back. Their toughest team will come this week as they face Melbourne High on March 10, in Melbourne. Despite not winning both days at the Commodore Pre-season classic, they have no blemishes through the regular season.
Melbourne has been hot in nearly every sport this season, and that includes on the tennis courts. At 8-1 their only loss came against rivals Eau Gallie, but they have a huge matchup set with Edgewood. Based on their record, their only close matchup besides the loss was against Satellite, but they have been solid all season long.
Eau Gallie is sitting at 9-1 with their only loss coming by Edgewood in the Cape Coast Conference Championship. Eau Gallie has put together a really good season, and it really puts into perspective how good Edgewood truly is that record-wise, the second-best team in the county lost 7-0 to Edgewood.
GIRLS FLAG FOOTBALL

The Space Coast Vipers sit at 5-0, as it seems their success from the boys’ football team has infected the girls’ flag football team. Although girls’ flag football is still new to Florida, the Vipers have been undefeated in their inaugural season.
The Viera girls’ flag football team is also undefeated at 5-0 and seems to have found a way to win week by week. Space Coast and Viera will not meet this season, but both have laid a foundation for the future of girls’ flag football. The Hawks are ranked in the top 50 in the state.
Melbourne is 5-1 on the season and has looked successful in their first season so far, their only loss came to Dr. Phillips. However, other than that game, they have been very dominant in every game they have played this season. At nearly halfway through the season, they look to finish the season strong.
LACROSSE
Holy Trinity lacrosse is 7-1 and has been dominant through the first half of the season. Their only loss came at the hands of Vero Beach in a narrow defeat. The Tigers are ranked as the no. 33 teams in the state of Florida and no. 52 nationally, they will look to carry their momentum into the playoffs.
Melbourne Central Catholic is 5-2, with one in-county loss to Melbourne, but their hardest game will come at the end of March against rival Holy Trinity. The Hustlers are currently undefeated in their district at 4-0, hoping they can make a run in the postseason.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Just like the boys, the girls’ Holy Trinity team is having a solid season at 8-1; their only loss came on the road against Viera, but regardless, they have looked like one of the better teams in Brevard County. Their most difficult game is just a week away as they face the undefeated Edgewood.
The Edgewood girls lacrosse team is 5-0 and has beaten every opponent this season by double figures. Outscoring their opponents 92-10 this season, they have a clear vision of reaching the postseason and winning a state championship. Edgewood is scheduled to face several out-of-county foes over the next week.
GIRLS BEACH VOLLEYBALL
The Viera beach volleyball team has been successful this season, at 3-0, and has picked up huge wins recently over Merritt Island and Bayside. With Merritt Island being the best team in the county’s indoor volleyball, that does translate well to the beach, but Viera pulled it out.
Satellite has won its first two matchups on the sand, but when they face Viera, they will have their hands full. Satellite’s beach volleyball team has been successful over the past couple of years and will continue to be competitive for the years to come.
