Mold Goes to the Dogs! Space Coast’s Mold K9 Detection Services Uses Canines to Find Hidden Threats

Hiring a mold dog can make all the difference to helping your family save both time and money

Arizona is trained to detect the odor associated with mold growth at its source, often behind walls, under flooring, and within HVAC systems — without drilling or demolition.
A Brevard County-based husband-and-wife team is introducing a highly specialized approach to a growing problem across Florida: Hidden Mold.
Mold K9 Detection Services, owned and operated by Bernie Guenther and Heather Guenther, is bringing canine-based mold detection to the Space Coast and Central Florida, an emerging service designed to locate mold at its source without invasive inspection methods.
At the center of the company’s work is Arizona, a certified mold-detection dog trained to detect the scent of active mold growth.
Arizona was trained by Bill Whitstine, a pioneer in mold-detection dogs.

“With Florida’s humid climate and frequent storm activity, indoor air quality and hidden mold have become major concerns for homeowners across Brevard County,” said Bernie Guenther.
“Many families dealing with persistent musty odors, prior water damage, or unexplained health concerns are unaware that canine mold detection is even an option. As a family-owned business based in the area, our goal has been to provide homeowners with a non-invasive way to identify potential mold sources before costly exploratory demolition begins.
“Using scent detection similar to that employed in narcotics or explosives work, Arizona can pinpoint mold hidden behind walls, beneath flooring, and inside HVAC systems—areas that typically require costly demolition to access,” said Bernie Guenther.

Mold Concerns Intensifying Across Brevard
The service arrives at a time when mold concerns are intensifying across Brevard County and the broader Central Florida region.
Persistent humidity, combined with frequent storms and water intrusion, creates ideal conditions for mold growth in homes and businesses.
Yet many property owners remain unaware of hidden contamination, often only noticing musty odors or experiencing unexplained health symptoms.
Unlike traditional inspections that may rely on visual checks or air sampling, canine detection focuses on locating the exact origin of mold.
This targeted approach can reduce unnecessary property damage and streamline remediation efforts.
“We wanted to give homeowners a smarter, non-invasive option,” said Bernie Guenther. “Instead of tearing into walls to find a problem, Arizona helps us go straight to the source.”
As demand grows, the company is already expanding.
