DiGiorgio Brings Military Discipline, Longtime Space Coast Experience to Chief Role

The City of West Melbourne has appointed Michelle DiGiorgio as its new police chief following a recent unanimous City Council vote. West Melbourne city leaders cited DiGiorgio’s institutional knowledge, leadership background, and commitment to community policing as key factors in her selection.

BREVARD COUNTY • WEST MELBOURNE, FLORIDA — The City of West Melbourne has appointed Michelle DiGiorgio as its new police chief following a recent unanimous City Council vote.

West Melbourne city leaders cited DiGiorgio’s institutional knowledge, leadership background, and commitment to community policing as key factors in her selection.

 “The City of West Melbourne confirmed the City Manager’s selection of Michelle DiGiorgio as our Police Chief – congratulations to her – our City is in great hands,” said a City of West Melbourne spokesperson.

“She assumes the role at a time when the department continues to focus on public safety initiatives and community engagement across West Melbourne.”

DiGiorgio, a 15-year veteran of the West Melbourne Police Department, previously served as Patrol Division Commander. She joined the department in 2011 and was named Officer of the Year in 2016.

DiGiorgio was promoted to Sergeant in 2017 and to Lieutenant in 2019. In March of 2023, she was promoted to Commander.

A retired Master Sergeant in the United States Army, DiGiorgio brings extensive leadership experience shaped by her military service, which city officials say reflects a strong emphasis on discipline, accountability, and integrity.

DiGiorgio received her Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Troy University and a Master’s in Criminal Justice from Keiser University.

She successfully completed FBI-LEEDA’s Supervisor Leadership Institute, Command Leadership Institute, and Executive Leadership Institute and received the FBI-LEEDA Trilogy Award.

The West Melbourne Police Department traces its roots back to 1959, shortly after the City was created.

Today, the West Melbourne Police Department has 52 sworn officers and 10 professional staff members who are responsible for the protection and safety of West Melbourne’s 29,739 residents, as well as the many visitors that come and go through the city every day.

The West Melbourne Police Department is accredited through the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation.
