A 17-year-old has died following a drowning incident Saturday afternoon near Lori Wilson Park, according to the Cocoa Beach Police Department.
BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA BEACH, FLORIDA – A 17-year-old has died following a drowning incident Saturday afternoon near Lori Wilson Park, according to the Cocoa Beach Police Department.
Police said officers and rescue personnel responded at approximately 1:55 p.m. to Lori Wilson Park, located at 1400 North Atlantic Avenue, after receiving reports of two juveniles — ages 12 and 17 — in distress in the water.
Rescue crews from the Cocoa Beach Police Department, Cocoa Beach Fire Department, and Brevard County Ocean Rescue quickly arrived on scene.
According to investigators, Brevard County Ocean Rescue lifeguards safely brought the 12-year-old to shore.
Following an extensive search, the 17-year-old was located submerged and unresponsive in the surf. Lifeguards, with assistance from Cocoa Beach Fire Department personnel, removed the teen from the water.
Both juveniles received emergency medical care at the scene before being transported to a local hospital.
Authorities said the 17-year-old was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
The investigation remains in its preliminary stages, and no additional details have been released at this time.
