PITTSBURG, KS — The Dr. Jacqueline Youtsos Scholarship for Medical Students is now officially open for applications, offering undergraduate and medical students across the United States an opportunity to support their academic journey in medicine while reflecting on the values of resilience, empathy, and service in healthcare.

Established by Dr. Jacqueline Youtsos, MD, the scholarship reflects a deeply personal mission shaped by lived experience in both patient care and patient recovery. The program is designed to support students who are actively pursuing careers in medicine and who demonstrate a commitment to compassionate, accessible healthcare for underserved communities.

Purpose of the Scholarship

The Dr. Jacqueline Youtsos Scholarship for Medical Students, founded by Dr. Jacqueline Youtsos, is built around the idea that meaningful medical careers are often shaped by personal challenge and human experience. Dr. Jacqueline Youtsos emphasizes the importance of understanding medicine not only through academic training, but also through lived encounters with illness, recovery, and inequities in healthcare access.

Through this scholarship, Dr. Jacqueline Youtsos encourages future physicians to reflect on the experiences that have shaped their desire to enter medicine and how those experiences will guide their approach to patient care.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants for the Dr. Jacqueline Youtsos Scholarship for Medical Students must meet the following requirements:

•  Be currently enrolled as an undergraduate student at an accredited U.S. college or university pursuing a pre-medical track, biology, health sciences, or a related field, or

•  Be enrolled in an accredited U.S. M.D. or D.O. medical program.

Applicants are required to submit an original, unpublished essay of 500–800 words responding to the following prompt:

“Dr. Jacqueline Youtsos faced a melanoma diagnosis during her medical residency, which deepened her understanding of what it means to be both a patient and a physician. Describe a challenge, personal health experience, or encounter with our healthcare system that shaped your own desire to practice medicine. How will you use that experience to provide more compassionate and accessible care to underserved communities?”

All submissions must be the original work of the applicant. AI-generated essays are not permitted and will result in disqualification. The Dr. Jacqueline Youtsos Scholarship for Medical Students, led by Dr. Jacqueline Youtsos, does not require a minimum GPA, placing emphasis on character, reflection, and purpose rather than academic ranking.

The scholarship reflects the professional and personal journey of Dr. Jacqueline Youtsos, who has dedicated her career to bridging gaps in healthcare access and expanding patient-centered care. After overcoming significant personal health challenges during medical training, Dr. Jacqueline Youtsos built a career focused on serving medically underserved populations and improving access to dermatologic and primary care services.
