ORLANDO, FLORIDA – The search for a new head coach in Orlando has come to an end as the Magic have hired San Antonio Spurs Assistant Coach Sean Sweeney.
As the San Antonio Spurs are headed to the NBA Finals, the Orlando Magic will have to wait a little longer to be acclimated to their new head coach.
Sean Sweeney has held multiple assistant coaching positions in the NBA since he got the opportunity to coach back in 2013 for the Brooklyn Nets.
However, this will be his first opportunity as a head coach.
After just one season with the San Antonio Spurs, Sweeney will take the reins in Orlando after Jamal Moseley was fired following their first-round exit.
Jamal Moseley spent five seasons with the Orlando Magic but began to draw criticism during the 25-26 campaign for the team’s inconsistencies.
However, given the Magic’s injuries, he was given some grace.
It all came to a crashing halt in this year’s playoffs: the Orlando Magic blew a 3-1 series lead over the No. 1-seeded Detroit Pistons, which was the last straw for Orlando’s front office.
Orlando was rumored to most likely hire former Chicago Bulls head coach, Billy Donovan; other names, such as Jason Kidd and Jeff Van Gundy, came up as well.
Now, Orlando will look to be rejuvenated under Sweeney and get over the first-round hump, something they have not done since 2012.
