Melbourne Man Dies After Electric Scooter Struck by Jeep on Croton Road

A 36-year-old Melbourne man died after the electric scooter he was riding was struck by a Jeep Cherokee near the intersection of Croton Road and McKinley Avenue, according to the Melbourne Police Department.

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – A 36-year-old Melbourne man died after the electric scooter he was riding was struck by a Jeep Cherokee near the intersection of Croton Road and McKinley Avenue, according to the Melbourne Police Department.

Police received reports of the crash at approximately 1:46 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 9.

The preliminary investigation indicates a white Jeep Cherokee and an electric scooter were both traveling northbound on Croton Road as they approached McKinley Avenue.

According to police, the Jeep’s driver attempted to swerve to avoid the scooter but was unable to prevent a collision.

Brevard County Fire Rescue transported the scooter rider, identified as 36-year-old Walter Davis McCoy of Melbourne, to a local hospital.

McCoy succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on Monday, Aug. 10.

Police identified the Jeep’s driver as a 59-year-old from Melbourne. The scooter involved was described as a 350-watt electric scooter.

The Melbourne Police Department’s Traffic Enforcement Unit is investigating the crash, and the case remains active.
