SHERIFF IVEY: Unfortunately and sadly, what she hit and left to die without calling for help was a horse
SHERIFF WAYNE IVEY: Brevard County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Anne Cross for DUI, Refusal to Submit, and DUI with Damage to Property. From the look of this photo, there is no doubt she hit something, but unfortunately and sadly, what she hit and left to die without calling for help was a horse. Cross actually said she drove home and had no issues with her car after the incident, which is crazy again, considering the windshield was barely hanging on at that point and the hood was crushed in. BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Well, folks, what happened Wednesday evening is a perfect example of the horrific hazards of DUI, as our Deputies arrested Anne Cross for DUI, Refusal to Submit, and DUI with Damage to Property.
From the looks of the photos, there is no doubt she hit something, but unfortunately and sadly, what she hit and left to die without calling for help was a horse.
Our agency first became aware of the incident when we received a call from a citizen saying they just saw a vehicle hit a horse and leave the scene on Lake Washington Road in Melbourne.
The vehicle information was relayed, and Deputies, as well as our partners at the Florida Highway Patrol, quickly responded to the scene where the horse was unfortunately pronounced dead on arrival.
The Florida Highway Patrol subsequently conducted a crash investigation, and our Deputies conducted a DUI investigation, which started with us responding to her address where we located the vehicle and Cross, who appeared to have facial injuries.

Cross told Deputies she was just driving home from shopping when “something” landed on the hood of her car, and she guessed it may have been a deer.
Now hold on…this was a full-grown horse, and you expect us to think you thought it was a deer, which is especially crazy given the amount of damage it caused to your vehicle.
Cross actually said she drove home and had no issues with her car after the incident, which is crazy again, considering the windshield was barely hanging on at that point and the hood was crushed in.
Cross appeared to have glassy eyes and slurred speech; however, she refused to participate in the “Drunk Olympics,” as we call it, or field sobriety exercises, as they’re better known as.
Cross also did not want to give it a go at the old breath test.
Well, despite her best efforts to avoid arrest, based on the other “clues” from the incident, Cross was placed under arrest and transported to Ivey’s Iron Bar Lodge.
Folks, we say it all the time: there’s no excuse for drinking and driving, as your life isn’t the only one you’re putting at risk!
