BREVARD COUNTY • CAPE CANAVERAL, FLORIDA – City of Cape Canaveral staff members were alerted to reports of a material spill beachside near the Harrison Avenue public beach crossover on Thursday.
City officials said staff immediately began coordinating with officials from the United States Coast Guard and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to assess and begin actively monitoring the situation.
Personnel from all parties were on scene by 9:30 a.m. to begin coordinating cleanup operations of a small, thin line of grease-like material running south to north in the low-tide area of the beach at the Harrison Avenue public beach crossover.
City officials informed the Coast Guard of the situation, and the USCG has begun cleanup with the FDEP. Please be mindful of cleanup operations when on the beach and, out of caution, do not touch the material.
The USCG will be utilizing aircraft to continue to monitoring the situation in the coming days, in case more washes ashore.
“The City would like to thank the service members of the USCG, and FDEP officials, for being so attentive and quick to help with the situation,” said a City of Cape Canaveral spokesperson.
“We greatly appreciate their service to our community! The City will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.”
