Long-Term Maintenance Work to Impact Marine Traffic at State Road 401 Bridge in Cape Canaveral
By Space Coast Daily // April 1, 2025
roadway traffic on SR 401 will remain unaffected

BREVARD COUNTY • PORT CANAVERAL, FLORIDA — Mariners navigating the waters around the State Road 401 Bridge in Cape Canaveral should be aware of upcoming maintenance work affecting marine traffic through the end of September.
While roadway traffic on SR 401 will remain unaffected, marine navigation will experience temporary changes due to maintenance and painting operations.
Bridge Opening Protocols
● The SR 401 Bridges will operate under a single-leaf opening system.
● Mariners requiring a full bridge opening must provide at least four hours’ notice, in accordance with 33 CFR 117.273(b).
● Public vessels of the United States and vessels declaring an emergency will be passed at any time without delay.

Channel Obstructions and Clearance Requirements
During painting operations, portions of the channel will be partially obstructed under the spans.
Vessels requiring more than 45 feet of horizontal clearance but that can safely pass with the bridge spans in the closed position must provide at least one hour’s advanced notice. This temporary deviation will be in effect for 180 days.
If the contractor determines that an extension beyond September 28, 2025, is necessary, they must notify the Coast Guard by August 1, 2025. This notification should include the reason(s) for the extension and the anticipated duration of the additional maintenance period.
Mariners are encouraged to plan their transit accordingly and communicate with bridge operators well in advance to minimize delays.
