President Trump Announces Upcoming Meetings with Zelenskyy, Putin Amid Renewed Russian Strikes on Ukraine

WASHINGTON D.C. – President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest, Hungary, in the coming weeks, following a scheduled meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Washington, D.C., on Friday.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said a “meeting of our High Level Advisors,” led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, will convene next week, though the exact location has not been finalized.
“President Putin and I will then meet in an agreed-upon location, Budapest, Hungary, to see if we can bring this ‘inglorious’ war between Russia and Ukraine to an end,” Trump wrote. “President Zelenskyy and I will be meeting tomorrow in the Oval Office, where we will discuss my conversation with President Putin, and much more. I believe great progress was made with today’s telephone conversation.”
Trump said his recent call with Putin focused largely on U.S.-Russia trade but did not mention discussions about U.S. weapons support for Ukraine, including the potential delivery of Tomahawk missiles. That issue has reportedly been central to Zelenskyy’s visit to Washington and was one of the main reasons behind Trump’s outreach to the Russian leader.
Earlier this week, Trump suggested he wanted to consult with Putin before approving the transfer of the long-range missiles, saying he would need “to see if he wants to have the Tomahawks going in their direction.”
Zelenskyy has made acquiring Tomahawk missiles a top priority, viewing the advanced weaponry as crucial for expanding Ukraine’s strike capability deep into Russian territory. Analysts say such weapons could significantly alter the dynamics of the war, potentially targeting Russian oil infrastructure and other critical assets that fund Moscow’s military operations.
The announcement of the Trump-Putin summit came just hours after a wave of Russian missile and drone attacks struck Ukrainian cities and energy facilities early Thursday.
In a post on X, Zelenskyy said more than 300 drones and 37 missiles—many of them ballistic—were launched across the country, hitting multiple regions, including the western-central city of Vinnytsia.
