Students from Rockledge High School’s Helping Educate Leaders in Maritime program received a firsthand look at careers on the water and beyond during a weeklong series of immersive experiences at Port Canaveral.
BREVARD COUNTY • PORT CANAVERAL, FLORIDA — Students from Rockledge High School’s Helping Educate Leaders in Maritime program received a firsthand look at careers on the water and beyond during a weeklong series of immersive experiences at Port Canaveral.
“Port Canaveral, in partnership with our partners at the Propeller Club of Port Canaveral and the local maritime community, is a longtime supporter of the HELM program and proud to provide these young mariners with a solid foundation for entering this exciting and ever-evolving industry,” said Capt. John Murray.
“The program, designed to prepare students for future opportunities in the maritime industry, connected participants with professionals and real-world environments, including a behind-the-scenes tour of the cruise ship Explorer of the Seas.”
The tour offered students a rare glimpse into daily operations aboard a major vessel, from logistics and engineering to hospitality and safety systems.

Port Canaveral officials said the initiative reflects a longstanding commitment to workforce development and community engagement.
The port has partnered closely with the Propeller Club of Port Canaveral and other local maritime stakeholders to support the HELM program and provide students with access to mentorship and hands-on learning.
Educators and port leaders said exposing students to real-world maritime environments helps build both technical knowledge and professional confidence, positioning them for future success in a competitive global industry.
The HELM program continues to serve as a pipeline for aspiring maritime professionals across Florida’s Space Coast, offering students early exposure to one of the region’s most vital economic sectors.
