The Making of Space Coast Daily
By Rock Paper Simple // April 16, 2012
I was approached some time ago by Maverick Multimedia with a concept… a concept that they called “Space Coast Daily”. We gladly sat down and talked about their vision because we were intrigued.
This vision was to create a news platform for the Space Coast like no other. The vision was to create a site that not only looked and worked excellently, but had solid content and involved and engaged its visitors. The vision was to build something that would rise above the status quo here in Brevard, something that would give new meaning to news in this county.
We were immediately interested in not only developing the project, but in partnering with Maverick Multimedia to make SCD become a reality… and so we did.
We immediately began brainstorming sessions to bring the many notes and concepts all together to form a project scope and development plan.
Out with the OLD…In with the NEWS!
We had begun developing the brand and image that would represent Space Coast Daily and will soon be seen across the county. Only weeks later we were meeting over lunch looking at the logo concepts and visual layout of the brand for SCD, color schemes, typography, and promotional boards.
We knew we wanted to be bold, modern and create an impact. The result was the creation of the professional, high powered logo and brand. . Our creative director brainstormed with the team; finding the right tag lines. The ideas included “SCD-your free local connection”, “Local News Now”, “I read it first online” and “Out with the Old…in with the News”. This final option proved to be a winner. It was catchy and truly conveyed the marketing message. Seeing our creative director develop the brand really made the project come alive. We all knew this project was going to come through with flying colors the moment we saw the brand finished!
We had begun developing the brand and image that would represent Space Coast Daily and will soon be seen across the county.
A couple weeks later we had completed the design of what we thought the website would look like. Looking back now at those designs, the site has evolved far beyond what we originally conceptualized. These designs gave me what I needed to start building the shell for the site. Now I would begin the long process of coding this powerful site.
Development for this project was not like any ordinary project. Framework had to be built for not only the many features being implemented for SCD’s initial launch, but for many of the future modules and features as well. The site had to be clean and operate smoothly and above all… it had to be fast! We built not only an intuitive and user-friendly front-end for you, our readers, but a powerful backend for our SCD team to manage the site as a unit. Every feature was built and rebuilt as we brought the site closer and closer to completion. Most features you see now on the site were built two or three times over as we made them more and more efficient or changed how we presented them. This site has come to fruition only through very careful attention and much revision and editing.
I’ll never forget being reminded by the team every day, “This thing has got to be fast!”.
Without the incredible insight and input from both the at Maverick Multimedia I could never have brought the development of this project so far. I thank my colleagues for being patient and providing excellent input as I coded away.
On the Eve of Launch
Today, we sit on the eve of launching SpaceCoastDaily.Com.
Today, we sit on the eve of launching SpaceCoastDaily.Com. Sitting here typing this article the night before launch, I can recall countless sleepless nights coding away at the functions required to bring a site like this one together… recall the countless cups of coffee consumed as I built one section after another… recall the countless changes, updates and new ideas we implemented into the platform. It has been an adventure and it will continue as we launch this first rendition of SCD. Many more features are in the works and as early as this week the SCD Team will be gathering together to discuss just what will be coming next as we take SCD to the next level.
Watching it Fill with Content
As the site neared completion, the SCD content team got to work, producing pages and pages of fantastic content in preparation of launch. Before this content began pouring it, the site was just an empty shell. It was incredible to watch it come alive.
Watching the site swell with content as articles, news stories, events, obituaries, celebrations and more begin flowing into it from the talented SCD content team… I fill with excitement and pride at what we have built. Reader, I know you will find Space Coast Daily a part of your everyday routine, not only to read the news, but to be a part of that news by sharing with us your stories and events, your celebrations and your knowledge.
I encourage you to be a part of this new online social community news platform.
We are honored and pleased to announce the launch of Space Coast Daily and look forward to providing this incredible service to our community.
Thank you for being a part of this launch!
