BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Dr. Leon Cohen could have picked any number of careers as a young man growing up in Johannesburg, South Africa.
“I had a lot of options open to me,” Cohen said. “But I was quite impressed with our family general practitioner in terms of helping people from his visits to our home and I decided that was what I wanted to do.”
After graduating from medical school at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, he completed residency at a number of hospitals in South Africa and eventually chose to launch a practice on Merritt Island.
His instincts were right, as Cohen has been honored by the Brevard Physicians Network as a top performer for 2011 for his Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set care and service rating.
“I look at every patient as an individual and listen to them and their concerns,” he said. “I give people as much time as I can so I can explain to them what the goals are that we are trying to reach regarding their health.”
Cohen leads a team of seven dedicated professionals that he credits with making patients feel welcome and like part of the family at his practice.

“All of our staff members understand what it is we are trying to achieve,” Cohen said. “Some have been with us for many years and others not as long, but the key is doing the best for all the patients that we can.”
Each patient visiting the office is greeted upon their arrival and treated with dignity and courtesy at all times, he said.
As far as living and practicing medicine on the Space Coast, Cohen said he wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.
“I enjoy it in Brevard as a whole,” he said. It’s not over-sophisticated here. It’s small and friendly and there’s a good cross-mix of patients.”
