Update: Police Probe Discovery Student’s Death

BREVARD COUNTY • PALM BAY, FLORIDA – Rescue personnel responding to a call for assistance at Discovery Elementary School in Palm Bay  found a 13-year-old student in severe medical distress at 8:15 a.m.Tuesday.

Palm Bay spokesperson Yvonne Martinez said rescue workers were called to the schools for a report that a child that had collapsed and was not breathing.

When paramedics arrived they immediately began attempts to revive the child who was transported to Palm Bay Hospital.

She subsequently was pronounced dead at 9:36 a.m.

Martinez said Palm Bay Police detectives are working with the medical examiner and the family to determine cause of death and any other circumstances.

“There is information regarding prior medical conditions that may have played a role in her death which remains under investigation,” Martinez said.

Palm Bay Police have identified the student as Promise Turner.

Brevard Public Schools public information officer Christine Davis said the entire Discovery Elementary community has been saddened by the student’s death.

“The student suffered a health related issue shortly after arriving at Discovery Elementary School on Tuesday morning.  Her teacher was immediately aware, administration was notified and 911 was contacted.”

Davis said emergency responders were on site within minutes and transported the student to the hospital.

“With grave disappointment, the student passed away mid-morning,” she said.

A crisis response team and Brevard Public Schools Area Office representatives responded immediately to the situation and worked with school staff throughout the remainder of Tuesday.

“The crisis team has returned to Discovery today to assist students and or faculty as needed,” Davis said.

  1. That really sucks for a person I know that is Promise’s sister. She left our class later in the day….. (I think after the death)
