Piazza, a 25-year-old right-hander from Port St. Lucie, made three appearances last week for the Angels’ Double-A affiliate, the Arkansas Travelers. He went 2-0 with seven hits allowed, three walks and 12 strikeouts in 13 2/3 scoreless innings.

Despite being used primarily as a reliever this season, Piazza was called on to start last Sunday’s game against the Tulsa Drillers.

In six and two-thirds innings, he surrendered just two hits and two walks, while striking out five en route to his third win of the season. His outing extended his personal scoreless streak to 17 2/3 innings.

Piazza is now 3-3 on the season with a 2.37 ERA and 72 strikeouts. Opposing hitters are batting .202 against him in 83 2/3 innings pitched.

During his four-year Panther career from 2006 to 2009, he went 20-11 overall with one save. He struck out 228 batters in 296 innings.
