Sheriff’s Aviators Help Locate Cocoa Suspect

BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA – With an assist from the skies above, the Cocoa Police Department tracked down and arrested a dangerous suspect late Sunday night.

Cocoa Police Department Officer Barbara Matthews said at about 10 p.m. Sunday, officers received a report of shots fired in the 700 block of Prospect Avenue.

Matthews said that when police arrived at the scene, they noticed several spent shell casings, but could not find a victim or suspect.

Calling for the assistance of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit, a suspect was quickly located through aerial surveillance.

Deputies observed a suspect, Dominick Brown, 19, throw away a firearm and they were able to guide officers to the location for recovery.

Matthews said when cornered by police, Brown refused to comply with multiple orders to surrender and was tased by officers..

He has been charged with possession of firearm by felon, possession of bullets by a felon, violation of probation, resisting arrest and possession of an altered firearm.

“The defendant obliterated the serial number on the firearm so it is unknown if it is stolen or recovered,” Mathews said.

So far, no victim has been found.
