Minimally Invasive Vascular Surgery Is New Way To Provide Patient Care

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Board certified in five specialties and the only board-certified phlebologist in Brevard County, as well as a December 2013 MBA graduate of the University of Miami, Dr. Irfan Imami, had initially planned on a career in law.

DR. IRFAN IMAMI is board certified in five specialties and the only board certified phlebologist in Brevard County. He holds board certifications in general surgery, vascular surgery, wound care, Undersea & Hyperbaric medicine and Phlebology.

“After spending an entire summer working at a legal firm, I felt medicine was my ultimate calling,” said Dr. Imami.

Medicine was essentially in his genes, both his father, and older brother Dr. Emran Imami, are also physicians.

Dr. Imami holds board certifications in general surgery, vascular surgery, wound care, Undersea & Hyperbaric medicine and Phlebology.

“All areas are tightly intertwined. Disorders in arterial circulation as well as disorders of the venous and lymphatic circulation lead to wounds.

“I felt in order to provide comprehensive patient disease management, the understandings of wound care, vascular surgery and hyperbaric medicine all needed to be mastered,” said Imami.

On top of mastering the above, Dr. Imami also mastered the first percutaneous abdominal aneurysm repair under local anesthesia in the state of Florida.

MINIMALLY INVASIVE VASCULAR SURGERY

With the advent of stents, atherectomy and endovascular devices, minimally invasive vascular surgery is the new way of providing care.

TEPAS-DOCS-180-2Many procedures are done on an outpatient basis and some even done in the office, meaning no overnight stays.

Imami says his favorite aspect of medicine is seeing patients heal, smile and walk. Vascular surgery procedures normally provide immediate improvement in symptoms after restoration of blood flow.

Patients usually walk better, with pain relief, which can normally be immediately seen in their demeanor and smile.

His most difficult challenges are trying to save a life or limb from complex vascular disease. His primary goal as a vascular surgeon is to restore blood flow to vital organs, though unfortunately, success is not possible every time.

He says it’s always difficult to explain to families and patients about limb loss, amputation, and of course, death.

With a new MBA in Healthcare Administration, what’s next on the horizon for Dr. Imami?

“I had always wanted to achieve my MBA, and one day may consider Healthcare Administration, however, at this time, I’m happy taking care of my patients,” added Imami.

Dr. Imami has been happily married for 14 years to his wife, Ayesha. With three children, ages 10, 7, and 5, he’s quite busy being a husband, father, and physician.

TEPAS Healthcare initially started as a two physician practice with both Dr. Irfan Imami, and his brother, Dr. Emran Imami. TEPAS Healthcare and TEPAS Breast Center have grown over the years with the addition of General Surgeons Dr. Clifford Gelman and Dr. Al Pecoraro, and Dr. Lauren Romeo, and a dedicated Wound Care physician.
