Panthers Clinch 4th Seed In SSC Tourny, Play 5th Seed Tampa Spartans Thursday
BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Florida Tech women’s basketball (20-6, 10-6 SSC) earns the season sweep over Lynn University (7-18, 1-15 SSC) with a 78-74 victory on Saturday afternoon at de Hoernle Sports and Cultural Center.
With the win, the Panthers clinched the fourth seed in the Sunshine State Conference Tournament, scheduled for March 5-8 at Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee, Florida.
FIT held the Fighting Knights to 35.1 percent shooting, including 26.7 percent during the second half. The Panthers also ended their recent shooting woes by making 50 percent of their baskets.
“We shot more on the inside this game,” said head coach John Reynolds.
“We were able to find great shots close up and we took advantage of them. That’s something we got away from the last few games.”
Florida Tech had twice as many points-in-the-paint than Lynn, 40-20, and out-rebounded the Fighting Knights 43-32 for the game.
Florida Tech received significant contributions from Tiesha Flagler and Shequana Harris in the win against the Fighting Knights.
Tiesha Flagler shot 10-for-13 from the field and recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 27 points and 17 rebounds, four assists and two steals.
The 27 points sets a career-high for Flagler, while the 17 rebounds ties a career-high she set earlier this season against Saint Leo on Jan. 3.
“Tiesha just threw the team on her back and carried us through the whole game,” stated Reynolds.
“I think her play inspired Shequana’s play. Those two kids gave us everything they had on a night when we didn’t play as well as we had hoped. That’s a career night for Tiesha, and Shequana played great too.”
Harris added 21 points and five rebounds and Kayk Wilson scored 12 points for the Panthers.
Both teams shot well in the first half with each making around 44 percent of their attempts. The Fighting Knights made 6-for-11 from behind the arc and went into halftime with a 40-36 advantage over FIT.
Lynn’s Tyler Tracy paced her team with 13 first half points, while Tifani Kerrison added 12 points.
Flagler and Harris combined for 29 of their team’s 42 second half points. The Panthers offense and defense were stout in the second half. As a team, in the second half FIT made 54.8 percent of its attempts and forced the Fighting Knights into shooting 8-for-30.
Neither team could pull away in the game.
The score was tied 74-74 until Wilson made a jumper with 54 seconds remaining. After a Lynn miss on its next possession, Wilson was fouled and made two free throws to seal the victory for the Panthers.
No. 4 seed Florida Tech will face off against No. 5 seed University of Tampa in the first round of the SSC Tournament on Thursday, March 5.
Game time is 2:30 p.m. at Silver Spurs Arena. The Panthers and Spartans split their season series this year, with each team winning at home. FIT won the first matchup 62-57 on Jan. 10 in Melbourne, and Tampa won the second matchup, winning 64-61 in Tampa.
