BREVAR COUNTY, FLORIDA – Golf can be a game of uncertainty and that’s what Eastern Florida men’s head coach Jamie Howell faces with the fall season dawning.

The late departure of NJCAA first-team All-American and the Titans co-No. 1 player Mickey DeMorat to NCAA Division I Liberty University on a full scholarship has brought both change and opportunity.

“You coach who you have,” said Howell. “The only constant in coaching is change and we have to embrace it. I have complete faith in the players I have and complete faith that they will be able to step up. Mickey leaving creates an opportunity and I would be very disappointed if no one sought to take advantage of the opportunity.

“Golf is a blend of patience and aggressiveness and now is the time for one of the guys to display that aggressiveness.”

Also, Howell will be on the recruiting trail, which is always the case in NJCAA athletics.

But he also will need to prepare his players for an ambitious fall schedule that sets the stage for the spring championship season.

To that end he will stress to his team that the 2015 spring season, one of the most decorated in the college’s long and successful golf history, is in fact, history.

But then again he can’t prepare them by not stressing where they came up short in finishing second by three shots in the national tournament in May.

“Last season is last season,” Howell said. “A new season begins with our first practice on Aug. 17.

“The theme of our first meeting will be improving by four shots this coming year. Four shots less as a team last year and we would have a different trophy in our case right now. Three shots less each for (Kerry) Sweeney and/or DeMorat and they would have a different trophy in their possession.”
