BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Every year, Brevard Public Schools hosts an annual award ceremony to celebrate excellent K-12 science teachers through its Exemplary Science Teacher Recognition Program.

These teachers were awarded for their efforts from last school year to further the scientific minds of our children:

Deborah Austin (DeLaura Middle), Elizabeth Faulkner (Apollo Elementary), Andrea Crowley (Merritt Island High), Kathryn Graf (Sculptor Charter), Kelly Otero (Viera Charter), David Schleith (Eau Gallie High) and Monique Rivera Vargas (Cambridge Elementary). All winners received an award, and a stipend check to utilize for future classroom projects. This was both Austin and Faulkner’s second time as selected winners in the past five years, which gained them the prestigious “Hall of Fame” status.

The Exemplary Science Teacher Recognition Program is a collaborative effort between the district’s Science Advisory Council and the Space Coast Science Education Alliance, a coalition of local organizations working to enhance science literacy in our community.

Attracting and retaining quality classroom teachers has been identified as an important and challenging key to achieving success in science. Although Brevard is fortunate to have many outstanding science teachers, there is currently a critical shortage of science teachers at local, state and national levels.

Thus, the awards ceremony recognizes science teachers who are dedicated to inspiring their students, growing as educators and learning more about their field.

Teachers are selected by a process that includes nominations (from students, peers, administrators, parents or other community members), recommendation letters, an essay, and a portfolio demonstrating exemplary teaching practices.
