BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – It will be a season of new for the Eastern Florida State College softball team as the program moves into its new softball complex on the Melbourne campus.

The team will feature plenty of new faces as well as 12 of the 14 players are freshmen but head coach Ed Yanes likes what he has seen so far from the group.

“We have a solid group of kids that are looking forward to the spring,” Yanes said. “We have a young class, so we are looking to capitalize on what we learned in the fall, every day is a learning curve for us. We are hoping to take what we learned in the fall and use it in the spring.”

The team will open the new season this weekend in Clearwater for the JUCO Kickoff Tournament before officially opening the new softball complex on Tuesday evening against Daytona State College.

“It is a fantastic facility and we are looking forward to playing games there,” Yanes said.

“We had a batting practice before break and Savannah (Alley) was the first one taking BP in the cage. We have been making a montage of the firsts – first one to step on the field, first hit, first pitch.

There will be a lot of firsts, hopefully we get out of the gate with a win. It is exciting to play in a facility that is one of the best in the state.”

Alley and Karli Smith are the two sophomores returning this season and will be the leaders of the group. Smith is coming off a big season in which she hit .379 with seven home runs and 49 RBI, earning first-team all-Conference honors.

“I think we will be good,  I think we have strong players in every position, we are getting to know each other and are coming together as a team,” Smith said.

“I think we have a lot of strong players and have some versatility. I think that will help us a lot this year.”

The Titans will open the season Friday against St. Petersburg College in Clearwater and will also face Georgia Military College on Friday.

They will play Tallahassee Community College and Illinois Central College on Saturday before Tuesday’s home opener at 5 p.m. Admission to all softball games is free.
