The Melbourne City Council has approved the purchase of two new Class 8 dump trucks using a $400,000 grant from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection Volkswagen Diesel Emission Mitigation Program.

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – The Melbourne City Council has approved the purchase of two new Class 8 dump trucks using a $400,000 grant from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection Volkswagen Diesel Emission Mitigation Program.

The new trucks will replace two 2006 model year trucks in the Streets and Stormwater Division.

Staff use these trucks to perform a variety of tasks, such as taking street sweeper spoils to the landfill, removing spoils from cleaning ditches, hauling dirt for filling ditch washouts and lime rock for road grading, and removing debris from homeless camp cleanups.

In October 2016, Volkswagen settled with the U.S. government resolving claims that it violated the Clean Air Act by selling diesel vehicles that violated the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s mobile source emission standards.

In 2017 a Mitigation Trust Fund was established to provide money for specified diesel emission reduction projects.

In the spring of 2026, Florida Department of Environmental Protection announced a Notice of Funding Availability for $20 million available for the purchase of new Class 8 trucks to replace diesel trucks of engine model year 2009 or older that are used for municipal services.

The City of Melbourne submitted a successful grant application in April 2026 and received notice of the award in May.

The new trucks should be placed into service by early 2027.
