BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — The National Weather Service in Melbourne is monitoring a low-pressure system expected to develop over the northeastern Gulf this weekend, with the National Hurricane Center giving it a 30% chance of tropical development over the next seven days.
As of Friday, July 17 update, forecasters said the system has a low probability of becoming a tropical cyclone as it slowly moves across the northeastern Gulf and into the early part of next week.
While significant development is not currently expected, the system is forecast to increase moisture across Florida, bringing a greater chance of showers and thunderstorms to East Central Florida this weekend.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to monitor the latest forecasts, as locally heavy rainfall, frequent lightning and gusty winds could accompany stronger storms regardless of whether the system develops into a named tropical cyclone.
Forecasters emphasize that the shaded area shown in the National Hurricane Center’s outlook is not a forecast track, but rather the region where tropical development could occur.
The National Weather Service and National Hurricane Center will continue to monitor the disturbance and provide updates as conditions evolve.
