ORLANDO, FLORIDA — Drowning is the leading cause of death among Florida children under the age of five, which is why drowning prevention experts Marlene Bloom and Mindy York continue to expand Baby Otter Swim School across the Sunshine State.

Chicago Cubs’ legend and MLB Hall of Fame member André Dawson is the school’s ambassador and national spokesperson. Dawson is a graduate of our program and is on a mission to help us make Florida a Zero drowning state.
Swimming lessons, including the school’s patented “Turn,Kick,Reach” program are offered for students as young as 10 months old. York’s passion to expand the school across the state stems from a terrifying incident she endured decades ago.
“I became involved with the Turn, Kick, Reach technique after my child who at the time was 17 months old was found at the bottom of a pool,” York said. “Fortunately, I knew CPR, and was able to revive her. Marlene had been after me for months to sign my daughter up for lessons, and I called her immediately telling her what happened. My daughter was in lessons practically, the next day. After experiencing what the TKR Program could do for my daughter’s safety and my peace of mind, I knew it was my mission to save lives by working with Marlene bringing the Turn, Kick, Reach program to the world. I now have two grandchildren who both learned the Turn, Kick, Reach method before they were a year old. They are both very confident swimmers who love being in the water. The peace of mind I have is priceless.”
All of the school’s instructors are state and nationally certified experts who travel to students’ home pools as well as neighborhood pools, gym pools and hotel pools where they can teach students in a comfortable setting with parents right at their side. Baby Otter Swim School originated in South Florida and is expanding its at-home swim school to central Florida.
With ocean shores, lakes and millions of swimming pools across the state, Florida’s children face drowning risks each day. York and Bloom remind parents that drownings are silent and can occur in bathtubs and buckets, as well.
