BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – “Cupcake Wars” returns for a decadent sixth go-round October 23, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Wuesthoff Medical Center—Rockledge Café to raise dollars for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk.

The sale concludes an active month of breast cancer awareness fundraisers at Wuesthoff Medical Center—Rockledge.

Jay Greer, director of diagnostic imaging, Wuesthoff Medical Center—Rockledge, thought this would be “a little fundraiser” when he first organized “Cupcake Wars” six years ago.

The fundraiser has raised more than $40,000 since 2012.

“This year alone, we’re hoping to raise $10,000,” said Greer.

The annual “Cupcake Wars” is a deliciously popular event with employees. For months, different departments brainstorm ideas, breast cancer awareness themes and taste creations for the event which culminates in more than 25 elaborate presentations. Each team must bake a minimum of 100 cupcakes. During the event, the café is transformed into a wonderland of sugary concoctions.

Scores of cupcakes are then critiqued for taste and appearance, presentation and thematic delivery by distinguished judges including Andy Romine, Wuesthoff—Rockledge president; Mary Sue Zinsmeister, chief nursing officer; Sean Fisher, assistant chief financial officer; and board members Mel Mills and George Roman. Rockledge Mayor Tom Price and his wife Theresa, along with two representatives from the American Cancer Society, also will be on hand for the judging.

After the awards are presented, the cupcakes go on sale during an event Greer describes as “quite the feeding frenzy. When it starts; it’s not for the faint of heart,” he said.

Last year, 2,400 cupcakes were sold during the first two hours of the sale. While it’s mainly an employee event, anyone who shows up at the café during that time can satisfy their sweet tooth.

Several fundraisers have been taking place during the month of October at Wuesthoff Medical Center—Rockledge, including raffles, a bake sale, and a silent cake and pie auction featuring a variety of tasty fare.

“The generosity, creativity and exquisite talent of our associates truly humbles me each year. These individuals provide exceptional care to our patients, but also have hidden baking talents that are equally noteworthy,” said Greer.

The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk takes place the following week on Oct. 28.

Registration begins at 7 a.m. at The Avenue Viera, with the walk commencing at 9 a.m.
