BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Meet Melbourne Police Officer Valerie Butler, Student Resource Officer at West Shore Jr/Sr High.
“I started the Police Academy in 2003 and was hired by MPD in January of 2004,” said Officer Butler.
“Prior to that, I worked for the Florida Marine Patrol, that’s where my love of law enforcement stemmed from. I could see early on the camaraderie and brotherhood of the law enforcement community, and I was hooked.
“I was a patrol officer and a field training officer before taking a position in the sex offender tracking unit. Last year the Student Resource Officer position opened up at West Shore and I jumped on it.”
“I was born in Illinois and moved to Florida in grade school. I attended Titusville High School then went to BCC and UNF. I have one sister and a niece and nephew who keep me on my toes.
“My baby is my 11-year-old German Shepherd who has my heart. I love to run, cook and spend time with my family. My other passion is my photography business where I do weddings, family shoots, senior photos and maternity.
“Since I started at West Shore I spend a lot of my free time rooting on my students at sporting events, musicals, science fairs, etc. I have found so much joy being here at West Shore and building relationships with my students. Who knows, maybe I have another career ahead of me as a teacher.”
