SPACE COAST DAILY TV: Former Port Canaveral Executive Director and Commissioner Malcolm “Mac” McLouth has announced he will run for the open District 5 Port Canaveral Commission seat that is being vacated by Tom Weinberg.
BREVARD COUNTY • PORT CANAVERAL, FLORIDA – Former Port Canaveral Executive Director and Commissioner Malcolm “Mac” McLouth has announced he will run as a Republican for the open District 5 Port Canaveral Commission seat that is being vacated by Tom Weinberg.
Weinberg, a two-term District 5 Port Canaveral Commissioner, announced last month that we won’t seek re-election later this year.
McLouth’s expertise and experience at Port Canaveral go back more than 51 years when in 1967 as a first-term port commissioner, McLouth proposed that the authority make a pitch to the then brand new Walt Disney World as its “outlet to the sea” for both goods and people.
In the six decades since, McClouth has been a visionary and loyal servant to the development and success of Port Canaveral, which is now the second busiest cruise port in the world – and a major economic driver for the region.
McLouth was honored for his service by Port Canaveral in 1995 by putting his name on the Malcolm E. McLouth Fishing Pier at Jetty Park, which is a landmark 1,200-foot public fishing pier at the opening to the channel into the Atlantic Ocean.
McLouth said he decided to run at the urging of other port commissioners and trusted friends who often rely and call upon his intimate institutional knowledge and enthusiasm for Port Canaveral.
“I feel that I have a lot to offer Port Canaveral and I’m at the peak of my knowledge, energy and understanding of where the port has come from, where it is now and where it needs to be in the future,” said McClouth.
Currently, there are two other registered candidates for this year’s election to the Port Canaveral District 5 seat.
Candidates include Maurice Boudreau, a Democrat who resides in Merritt Island and is president of the East Merritt Island Homeowners Association; and Republican Robyn Hattaway, an attorney from Merritt Island who was a candidate for Brevard County Commission in District 2, but dropped out of that race and entered the Port Canaveral commission race.
Canaveral Port Authority District 5 includes Merritt Island, Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral.
Two other Port Canaveral commissioners are also up for re-election this year including District 3’s Wayne Justice and Jerry Allender of District 1. Currently, there are no other candidates in either race.
The other port commissioners include Bob Harvey of District 4 and Micah Loyd of District 2.
