BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – The Orlando Melbourne International Airport – MLB electrified the skyline with the temporary neon lighting of the new Air Traffic Control Tower. Flipping the switch will be Melbourne Airport Authority Chairman Jack Ryals and his two granddaughters.
“If you can see the tower during the day, at that time you’ll also be able to see it at night,” said Lori Booker, airport spokesperson.
“The neon-like lights bring on the appearance of a sail, a nod to the Harbor City, Melbourne, Florida. If you want to see the sign, be prompt. It won’t stay on for long because it is distracting to the controllers in the old diminutive tower still in operation below.
“After we turn off the tower lights, we are asking for the community to let us know they saw it by turning on their front porch lights, their car headlights, their cell phones, etc.
“This is a moment to share with your children and your grandchildren. Decades from now they will remember that they were there when the tower lights went on for the first time. It’s historic. It’s memorable. It’s a Melbourne moment in time,” said Booker.
Orlando Melbourne International Airport serves the Central Florida coast with three runways, a 200,000 sq. ft. terminal and a 40,000 sq. ft. customs facility. Greg Donovan, A.A.E. is executive director. The airport is convenient to beaches, Orlando, Kennedy Space Center and Port Canaveral.
