Brevard Sheriff’s Deputy Shoots Two Pit Bulls Running Loose that Killed Cat, Threatened Children

Deputies responded Thursday morning to Arborwood Avenue in Port St. John

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Brevard County Sheriff’s Deputies responded Thursday morning to Arborwood Avenue in Port St. John in response to a report of two pit bulls that were running loose and had killed a cat, according to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.

Brevard County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Tod Goodyear said that upon arriving in the area, the deputy observed the dogs running loose on Leonard Avenue, mauling a cat.

“Each dog had part of the cat in their mouths and were violently shaking it,” said Goodyear.

“The deputy attempted to separate the dogs by blowing his horn and eventually by striking one of the dogs. Each time the dog was struck, it would briefly disengage, turn its attention toward the deputy, then return to attacking the cat.

“A second deputy used his air horn in an attempt to scare the dogs, however, none of the tactics worked as the dogs continued to aggressively attack the cat.”

Goodyear said that fearing for the safety of the cat, children in the area who were on their way to school, and his own safety, the deputy discharged one round from his firearm, striking one of the dogs.

The dogs then released the cat and ran a short distance away, where the owner was able to gather the animals.

“It was learned at that time, that both dogs had been struck by the single round discharged by the deputy,” said Goodyear.

A search of the area located one dead cat from the earlier attack. The cat that was attacked in front of the deputies ran off into a wooded area and has not been located.

The dogs were taken to a local veterinarian’s office for treatment.

Animal Services is investigating the incident in reference to ordinance violations.

“The investigation thus far has uncovered information that this is not the first time these dogs have been observed running loose in the area and menacing other animals,” said Goodyear.
