BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA – The opportunity of a lifetime some might say, “the chance to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City.”
This was a dream come true for the students of Cocoa High’s Chorus when they learned they had been invited to represent the state of Florida at the 2019 “Fall Sing: Remembering 9/11.”
Raising money to cover the $85,000 travel cost seemed a bit daunting, but with an opportunity of this magnitude, CHS music director Dr. Misty Martinez and Principal Rachad Wilson were determined to help these students make it to the Big Apple and show the world the level of talent and dedication.
As word spread, so did the community’s interest and support. It took months of hard work, performances and practice, but the Cocoa High Chorus reached its fundraising goal.
They will depart for New York City on Saturday, October 12.
To make the trip, the choir needed to raise $1,500 for each of the 50-member choir and six chaperones.
In addition to their appearance at Carnegie Hall, the group will take in the sights and sounds of the Big Apple, including jaunts to Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty and the 9/11 Memorial and Museum.
