WATCH: Suspect Charged With Stealing Two Cocoa Police Patrol Vehicles, Leading Officers On 60-Mile Chase On I-95

WATCH: Volusia County deputies were alerted to a stolen Cocoa Police Department vehicle entering Volusia County on I-95 on Thursday afternoon. A pursuing Cocoa police officer was able to force the stolen cruiser off the highway and into the woods, where it crashed and became stuck around the 252-mile marker. However, as additional responding units approached, the suspect was able to jump out of the wrecked patrol car and into another Cocoa police vehicle, again fleeing northbound on I-95.

BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA — A suspect that stole two Cocoa police patrol vehicles during interactions with law enforcement on Thursday is now facing multiple felony charges.

Xavier Cummings, 33, is currently in the Volusia County Jail with no bond and is currently facing charges including Grand theft auto, Armed burglary, Aggravated Fleeing and eluding, Habitual traffic offender, Grand theft firearm, Reckless driving w/property damage, Felony DWLS with knowledge and Resisting without violence.

According to Cocoa Police Public Information Officer Yvonne Martinez, the charges stem from the suspect stealing two patrol vehicles and then leading officers on a nearly 60-mile chase involving multiple law enforcement agencies.

The incident began when Cocoa police patrol officers responded to a reported disturbance near a local motel in the 4000 block of State Road 520.

As officers checked out the suspect, he took off and jumped into one of the patrol vehicles nearby. The suspect then fled northbound on Interstate-95.

“Stop sticks were deployed in Volusia County and an officer used a pit maneuver to get the vehicle stopped. The suspect and the vehicle were in the wooded area just off the highway,” said Martinez.

“As officers attempted to take the suspect into custody, he fled, jumped into another Cocoa patrol vehicle and continued north. Stop sticks were deployed and the suspect was taken into custody without further incident.”

Fortunately, no officers were injured and the investigation is ongoing.

According to Cocoa Police Public Information Officer Yvonne Martinez, Chief Evander Collier is currently in the process of reviewing this incident which will examine the department’s policies and procedures to determine if any violations occurred.

“Chief Collier will also be making determinations as to whether any agency policies should be updated and/or added,” said Martinez.
