BREVARD COUNTY • TITUSVILLE, FLORIDA – As a child, Brooke Porter remembers how much her father, Kenny, enjoyed working in the restaurant business.

“Restaurants were always part of his life,” said Brooke.

Porter also remembers how delicious were her dad’s barbecues, even at Thanksgiving.

“He used to do the best-smoked turkey for Thanksgiving,” she said.

In March of this year, Kenny Porter joined two culinary passions, barbecues and restaurants, when he opened Smokey’s Real Pit Bar-B-Q in Titusville.

The elder Porter selected U.S. 1 as the site for his restaurant, a sprawling and newly renovated red building that has been home to several eateries in the past. He runs the kitchen himself, making sure the “pit” is perfect. He also keeps a close eye on the sauces, all homemade.

When Brooke visits from Palm Bay, she invariably goes for a Smokey’s Specialty Sandwich, a treat piled high with chopped pork and served on – what else – Texas toast, accompanied by coleslaw and pickles. Brooke also knows to save room for her stepmother’s carrot cake, too.

“It’s to die for,” she said.

The menu also features “Smoke Stacks” with ham or turkey. Add two sides for $3 and the $6.99 Stacks become a seriously big meal.

Platters, already served with two sides and garlic bread, feature beef, chicken, pork and St. Louis ribs. To sample it all, go for the Smokey’s Combo, where all the options are on the plate.

Family dinner is easy-peasy with the Smokey’s Special for four, served with eight sides and garlic bread. The 10-and-under crowd have their own Lil Smokey plates that include chicken tenders, barbecue chicken, choice-of-meat sliders and grilled cheese.

Daily specials run the gamut, but all provide good value. For example, a pork platter, be it sliced or chopped, together with a drink, was $13.99 in recent special for dinner. For lunch, a pork sandwich special, with two sides and a drink, went for $11.99.

If early reviews are an indication, Porter has the right recipe with Smokey’s.

“Amazingly good! The food is off the chain and the staff is sweet as could be!” wrote one happy diner.

Another patron made a return visit.

“The first time had the combo plate all the meat was excellent tasting and cooked perfectly,” he said. “The second time I had the beef sandwich and my wife had ribs again both meats were juicy and tender.”

If Smokey’s is Porter’s restaurant-dream-come -true, it may also turn out to be the dream of Titusville barbecue fans.

“He loves barbecue and he knows the people of Titusville love barbecue,” said Brooke.
