BREVARD COUNTY • TITUSVILLE, FLORIDA – The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team arrested fugitive Thomas West outside a residence in Titusville on Tuesday afternoon.

West was transported to the Brevard County Jail on warrants for Failure To Appear for Jury Trial Reference Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, a remand warrant and bond revocation for Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, and also Failure to Appear Reference Driving an Unregistered Motor Vehicle and Possession of Drug paraphernalia.

In addition to the warrants, West was also charged with Resisting Arrest and Possession of Narcotics for his criminal actions prior to his arrest by members of the BCSO SWAT Team.

KNOWN FUGITIVE

The apprehension began when Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Carson Hendren observed West, a known fugitive, outside a residence on South Singleton Avenue in Titusville.

According to a Brevard County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson, Deputy Hendren had previously arrested West and was aware that he had outstanding felony warrants for firearm-related charges.

As Deputy Hendren approached the house, West attempted to avoid arrest by running inside the residence. Deputy Hendren immediately requested that other Deputies respond to the scene to assist in establishing a perimeter, at which time various patrol units and Brevard County Sheriff’s Office K-9 units responded.

“The homeowner, who was not involved in the incident, was extremely cooperative with our team and advised that West had entered a basement area through an access hole inside the residence and that the only exit from the basement was locked from the exterior of the home,” said Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey.

“The homeowner further advised Deputy Hendren that West had a fully loaded syringe with narcotics and was planning to overdose rather than go back to jail and eventually prison.”

SWAT TEAM, NEGOTIATORS CALLED TO SCENE

Due to West being barricaded and having an extensive criminal history including firearms charges, the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team and Negotiators were dispatched to the scene in an effort to encourage West to peacefully surrender.

“After repeated attempts to make contact with West and obtaining a search warrant, members of the SWAT Team tactically entered the basement and found West unresponsive,” said Sheriff Ivey.

“Members of the SWAT Team immediately deployed Narcan to revive West who then became alert and responsive.”

West was attended to at the scene by Brevard County Fire Rescue and was subsequently transported to a local hospital where he was evaluated and eventually cleared by medical staff.

“West was detained at the Brevard County Jail on a “No Bond” status and will hopefully sit his butt in jail until he has his day in court,” said Sheriff Ivey.

“When are these people going to learn that if you break the law in Brevard County you are going to jail and if you are a fugitive, you can only play hide and seek a short while before one of our Deputies cuffs and stuffs you in the back of their patrol car. If you play stupid games, you win stupid prizes!”
