Edgewood Jr./Sr. High Shines as Brevard Academic Teams Compete in Final Championship

Over the past six weeks, 13 high school academic teams have been competing against each other in quiz bowl-style competitions for the chance to participate in the final championship event which was held this month. BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Over the past six weeks, 13 high school academic teams have been competing against each other in quiz bowl-style competitions for the chance to participate in the final championship event which was held this month.

Six teams representing the following schools advanced as finalists to compete for the championship:

■ Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School
■ Edgewood Jr./Sr. High School
■ Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy
■ Melbourne High School
■ Rockledge High School
■ West Shore Jr./Sr. High School

Edgewood Jr./Sr. High triumphed as both the championship winner and the overall season winner. Following Edgewood in the championship event was West Shore in second place, and Cocoa Beach in third place. Additionally, Cocoa Beach placed in second for the season with Holy Trinity placing third.

The Brevard Academic All-Stars were also named at the championship event:

■ Jack Baptist, West Shore Jr./Sr. High School
■ Tommy Tibbetts, Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School
■ Phoenix Boggs, Edgewood Jr./Sr. High School
■ Jon Want, Edgewood Jr./Sr. High School
■ Nikhil Iyer, Edgewood Jr./Sr. High School
■ Giancarlo Valdivia, Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy

Alternates: Jose Montalvo, Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy; Matt Krininger, West Shore; Nate Horton, Cocoa Beach
Coaches: Mr. Sean Johnston, Edgewood Jr./Sr. High School and Mr. Mike Prince, Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School

The Brevard Academic All-Stars will come together as a new team representing Brevard County and will work to prepare for the Commissioner’s Academic Challenge, a slow-paced tournament that will test competitors in the areas of language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, fine arts, world languages, physical education, health, and technology.

The Commissioner’s Academic Challenge is a statewide competition that will take place at Disney’s Coronado Resort March 31 – April 2.
