BREVARD COUNTY • MERRITT ISLAND, FLORIDA – R.L. Stevenson Elementary in Merritt Island is looking to raise $15,000 to attend the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals at Iowa State University on May 25.
The team needs to raise the funds in order to cover the costs of lodging, airfare and food while competing during the four-day competition.
The team of seven third graders from R.L. Stevenson Elementary took first Place in the Regionals followed by a third place finish in state competition.
The team is one of four groups from Brevard County that advanced to the World Finals this year and are the only elementary school representing the Space Coast.
The team ranges ages 8 to 9 years old and they are solving Problem #5, “Life is a Circus!”

Regional competion was held at Viera High School this year, while the state championships was held in the Orange County Convention Center with more than 5,000 people in attendance.
Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem-solving program involving students from kindergarten through college. Team members work together at length to solve a predefined long-term problem and present their solution to the problem at a competition.
They must also participate in the spontaneous portion of the competition by generating solutions to a problem they have not seen before.
While the long-term problem solution often takes many months to complete and involves various elements of theatrical performance, construction, and design, the spontaneous portion occurs on the day of the competition.
