BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Children’s Hunger Project is raising funds to ensure that no child is hungry in Brevard County this school year. Dedicated to helping elementary school children in need by providing them with food to take home for weekends and during school breaks, TCHP works to ensure children have access to basic nutrition when they may not have access to school meals.
Hunger among school-aged children in Brevard County is a critical issue. Without proper nutrition, children cannot thrive academically, physically, or emotionally.
The statistics are staggering:
■ The overall percentage of students who receive free and reduced-price meals in Brevard County has reached 60.2%, an increase from last year’s percentage of 56.6%.
■ Food insecurity impacted 12% of Brevard County children in 2021.
■ Among food-insecure children in Brevard County, 72% reside in households with income at or below the poverty line and 28% may not be eligible for federal nutrition programs.
TCHP fed over 1,000 more children last 2022-23 school year than the previous 2021-22 school year, bringing the number of children provided for to almost 4,000.

“The thought of sending a child home from school on a Friday not knowing if they will have enough nourishment to get them through the weekend keeps me awake at night,” said TCHP Executive Director Cheryl Cominsky. “It’s a heart-wrenching reality that many children in Brevard County face every week. But together, we can make a difference.”
TCHP has created a campaign, “Mission: Feed Our Kids,” to jump-start Brevard County children in the right direction, with a goal for the month of August to get 100 additional children sponsored for weekend nutrition.
Donors are asked to give by going to the TCHP website donation page. There are multiple ways to give, including monthly, annually, one-time, gifts of stock, and more.
For example, $16 a month or $190 annually feeds a child on weekends for the school year and on school breaks, while $84 a month or $1,000 annually feeds five children on weekends for the school year and on school breaks.
Donations go directly toward purchasing nutritious food packages for hungry kids locally.
