Boaventura de Sousa Santos, with an outstanding career of more than 50 years in the field of sociology, has dedicated his life to understanding society and social problems.
Born in Coimbra in 1940 into a working-class family, his childhood was marked by the need to contribute to household expenses from an early age, which led him to tutor youths younger than himself.
His path to sociology began when he entered law school, becoming one of the first sons of the working class to do so. His academic excellence was remarkable and, in fact, professors even visited his father at the restaurant where he worked to confirm their relationship and congratulate him on his success.
Despite the limitations imposed by the dictatorship in Portugal, Sousa Santos found ways to study social issues and subsequently ventured to West Berlin to study philosophy of law. The experience of living in a city divided by the Berlin Wall and his contact with communist East Germany influenced his outlook.
His interest in sociology was consolidated during his stay in the United States, where he witnessed social movements, such as the civil rights movement and the struggle against the Vietnam War, which led him to embrace Marxism as a theoretical approach to understanding society. After completing his PhD, he returned to Portugal and played a fundamental role in the creation and development of the Faculty of Economics at the University of Coimbra, marking the beginning of his work in the sociology of Portuguese society.
Furthermore, his participation in the World Social Forum in Porto Alegre in 2001 led him to a profound reflection on the cultural, social and epistemological diversity of the world, which resulted in the formulation of the epistemologies of the South. In this way, Boaventura de Sousa Santos has maintained his passion for addressing the social and political problems of his time, and his determination to understand and address inequalities has been a constant in his life.
The contributions of Boaventura de Sousa Santos in the academic world
Throughout his career, Boaventura de Sousa Santos has addressed a wide variety of research topics that have left a profound mark on the academic and social spheres. For decades, he has explored epistemology, sociology of law, political sociology, postcolonial theory, globalization, social movements, multicultural democracy and human rights.
One of the most outstanding milestones in Boaventura de Sousa Santos’ career is his influential work “A Discourse on the Sciences” which he originally presented at the University of Coimbra in 1986 and later published in 1987. This work marked an era of transformation in Portugal after the April 25 Revolution and its influence even extended to the field of secondary education, where numerous teachers incorporated it into their curricula.
Another highlight in his academic career was his doctoral thesis, entitled “Law Against Law: Legal Reasoning in Pasargada Law”, published in 1974 under the direction of Iván Illich at the Intercultural Documentation Center in Cuernavaca, Mexico. This work contributed significantly to the debate on law and theory at a crucial moment in Latin American history.
Boaventura de Sousa has also published relevant books on the sociology of law and politics, such as “Towards a New Legal Common Sense” and “The Orphan Millennium”. These works have had a substantial influence on the understanding of legal and political issues from a critical and revolutionary perspective.
Since 2010, Sousa Santos has delved into the “epistemologies of the South”, exploring the struggle against “epistemicide”. His works, including “Epistemologies of the South: Justice against Epistemicide” and “The End of the Cognitive Empire”, have contributed significantly to the debate on how knowledge is constructed and destroyed in the global context.
In addition to his work in academia, Boaventura de Sousa Santos is a passionate poet with eleven published books, some of which have been finalists in prestigious literary awards. His poetry has enriched his identity as an intellectual and artist, challenging the conventional notion that a good sociologist cannot be a good poet.
Therefore, we can conclude that Boaventura de Sousa Santos has conducted fundamental research in fields such as sociology, law and epistemology, challenging the status quo and promoting a critical approach in his work. His legacy will endure in the academic and literary fields, highlighting the importance of questioning the dominant paradigm and exploring new perspectives.
