Brevard Public Schools’ 86 Campuses Avoid Major Damage During Hurricane Milton, Classes to Resume Tuesday

Brevard Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Mark Rendell sent the following Hurricane Milton update to staff and families on Friday:

I sincerely hope that each of you, and your family, have made it through this experience with Hurricane Milton safely and securely. Much of Brevard County is still recovering today from the impacts of the storm. I want to share with you all where we are with our plans to re-open.

Today, Friday October 11, School District personnel were dispatched to inspect our campuses and administrative buildings.

We’re pleased to report that none of our 86 campuses sustained any major damage. We are continuing to work in close contact with Florida Power and Light on the handful of schools that remain without power, but are confident those will be resolved before Monday.

We plan to resume normal operations on Monday, October 14. Monday is a Teacher Workday, so students will return to class on Tuesday, October 15.

There has been a lot of hard work behind the scenes that has made it possible to return to business as usual.

School based personnel and our facilities team began the process before the storm arrived, with a lot of preventative measures across the district. We then monitored conditions throughout the hurricane. And, as mentioned, today our principals and other School District staff inspected each campus to ensure everything is fully operational and safe for next week.

As you know, we’ve missed four school days already this hurricane season with impacts from back-to-back storms. We have developed plans to make up for the lost instructional time and will work with our employee groups to finalize those plans.

I’m pleased to inform you that our make up plans do not disrupt the Thanksgiving Holiday, which will remain on the schedule as planned, Monday November 25 through Friday November 29.

I am so thankful for the team effort, and the support of the community during these repeat storms and missed school days. I know that it can be a difficult juggling act for families to manage the uncertainties of school schedules. I appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as we work through these challenges.
