Eastern Florida State College Women’s Basketball Team Heads to Georgia for Lady Jets Holiday Classic

Titans come into this year’s tournament 12-2 and have won four in a row

BREVARD COUNTY • FLORIDA – The Eastern Florida State College women’s basketball team will have a busy weekend as they will compete in the Lady Jets Holiday Classic in Georgia.

The 23rd-ranked Titans are returning to the tournament after missing it last season. They are 8-7 at the tournament in five appearances. The Titans come into this year’s tournament 12-2 and have won four in a row heading into the tournament.

“The South Georgia Tech trip is always special,” Eastern Florida State College women’s basketball coach MJ Baker said. “It is very competitive basketball featuring some of the top teams from the Southeast in a great atmosphere. We’ve done our best to be ready
for three tough games in three days.”

Eastern Florida State College will open the tournament Sunday night against host South Georgia Tech who open the tournament Saturday evening against St. Petersburg College. They are 7-4 on the season and had a three-game win streak snapped by No. 11 Chipola College Dec. 19.

The Lady Jets are led by the duo of Mio Sakano and Jamiah Gregory who are each averaging 14 points per game. Teammate Stephanie Salumu comes into the weekend averaging 10 points and eight rebounds.

Sunday night’s game will be the last game of the day, tipping off at 7 p.m. The Titans will be back on the court Monday afternoon in a game against No. 9 Shelton State who are 9-2 and have won three of the last four heading into the tournament.

The Lady Bucs have four players averaging 10 points or more this season led by Julie Nekolna who is averaging 14.4 points and 7.5 rebounds while teammate Makala Hobdy is averaging 13.3 points per game. The two teams met in the tournament in 2023 with Shelton State picking up the win.

Eastern Florida State College will wrap up the tournament on Tuesday with a noon game against Northeast Mississippi Community College. Northeast Mississippi is 7-4 this season and is coming off a 114-point effort against Arkansas State Mid-South. The Tigers will open the tournament against Daytona State College and then play St. Petersburg College before facing the Titans.

Northeast Mississippi is led by Jakeria Hawkins who is averaging 12.7 points while teammate Kamiyha Griffin is averaging 12 points and six rebounds per game. Tyesha James comes into the weekend averaging 9.7 points and 7.2 rebounds.

“It will be a stern test of where we are as a team at the halfway point of the season and with 12 conference games awaiting us in the new year,” Baker said.

The Titans will return to conference play Jan. 4, traveling to Florida Southwestern State College for a battle of the top two teams in the Citrus Conference. They will be back at Titan Field House on Jan. 8 against St. Petersburg College.

The game will tip off at 5:30 p.m. and admission is free.
