Eastern Florida State College Baseball Team Opens the Season with 3-0 Weekend

BREVARD COUNTY • FLORIDA — The Eastern Florida State College baseball team rolled to an easy win in the season opener at the SCF Legends Classic in Bradenton on Friday afternoon.

The Titans won the season opener against St. Johns River State College 14-3.

Eastern Florida State College got things started in the top of the first inning as Kevin Smith walked and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Cerrone. St. Johns River tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning, but the lead was short lived as the Titans erupted for five runs in the fourth inning.

Gustavo Mendez hit a single, Cerrone walked and Bo Tabola singled to load the bases. Bryce Jackson singled to drive in Mendez and then Tabola, Jackson, Jason Mack and Jamel Vera would all score in the inning.

Up 6-1, the Titans would score a run in the sixth, two more in the seventh and scored five times in the ninth for the win.

Starting pitcher Owen Simmons tossed four solid innings, allowing one run on one hit and struck out four in the win.

Mendez finished with three hits, driving in two runs and scored twice while Jackson had two hits as everyone in the lineup had a hit in the game. Smith stole three bases as the Titans scored 14 runs on 12 hits.

College baseball team rebounded from a slow start to defeat Pasco-Hernando State College Saturday at the SCF Legends Classic in Bradenton.

The Titans, who are now 2-0 this season, came back from a 7-0 deficit to win 16-8 in seven innings to win the first of two games tonight.

Down 7-0 in the bottom of the second inning the Titans responded with three runs in the bottom of the second inning as Ethan Askin, J Vera and Jeff Davis all had RBI singles in the inning.

Jacob Goldman came in to finish the second and then had a shutdown third inning. The Titans loaded the bases with one out and Bryce Jackson unloaded them with a three-run double. He would take third and score on an errant throw to tie the game 7-7.

Pasco-Hernando would score a run to make it 8-7 in the fourth inning but the Titans once again battled back in the bottom of the fifth inning.

With two on, Vera smacked and RBI single to tie the game and then Davis walked with the bases loaded to give the Titans an 8-7 lead. The Titans would score five times in the fifth to take a 12-8 lead.

Kevin Smith hit a pitch out of the park with two on in the sixth inning for his first home run of the season. Up 15-8, Bo Tabola reached on an infield single, stole a base and later scored the game-ending run.

Vera finished with three hits while Smith drove in four runs and Jackson had three RBI in the win.

Landen Moore threw three shutout innings, striking out six for his first win.

The Eastern Florida State College baseball team edged Miami Dade College to finish the SCF Legends Classic 3-0.

The Titans scored twice in the sixth inning to beat the Sharks 2-1 in seven innings at IMG Academy.

Miami Dade took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning on a balk.

The lead would not last long as Jackson Wargo led off with a walk, advanced all the way to third on a wild pitch and scored on Ryan Cerrone‘s sacrifice fly. Tied 1-1, Gustavo Mendez would later score on a wild pitch after reaching on a walk to give the Titans a 2-1 lead.

Houston Wills threw two perfect innings striking out one to pick up the win. Starting pitcher Nathan Hook allowed just two hits over four shutout innings, striking out five.

Eastern Florida State College will be home for the first time this season on Wednesday, hosting Webber University JV for a 5 p.m. game at Bruce Bochy Field. Admission to games is free.
