Traveled to India and other parts of the world to perform thousands of free cataract surgeries in villages and remote areas, bringing sight to the blind and hope to the abandoned.
Longtime Brevard County physician and humanitarian Dr. Mukesh Aggarwal, 75, a giant in ophthalmology, cataract, and refractive surgery, passed away on January 10.
Dr. Aggarwal founded The Eye Clinic and Laser Institute in 1980, established Brevard’s first Ambulatory Surgery Center, and was the first to bring LASIK surgery to the Space Coast.
Dr. Aggarwal was the founding president of the Indian Association of the Space Coast in 1991 and a founding member of the Brevard Indo-American Medical and Dental Association, one of Florida’s leading medical associations. He served as president of BIMDA from 2002 to 2004 and was the first national delegate to the AAPI National Conference in 2003.
As the preeminent medical statesman of his time, Dr. Aggarwal represented the broad interests of the first-generation Indian-American immigrant physicians and dentists. He has fought for equality, justice, and the professional rights of all physicians in hospitals and private practice since 1980.
“Dr. Mukesh Aggarwal was the single most impactful leader in the local Indian-American community since 1980,” said longtime friend and associate Glad Kurian. “His greatest passion was medical missions in underserved parts of the world where he performed thousands of cataract surgeries, giving sight to the blind and hope to the abandoned.”

Dr. Aggarwal cared for family, patients, the community, and the underserved in underprivileged parts of the world. Encouraged by a colleague, the ophthalmologist went on his first medical mission in 1993 to the Dominican Republic.
He traveled to India and other parts of the world to perform thousands of free cataract surgeries in villages and remote areas, bringing sight to the blind and hope to the abandoned.
“You don’t think about what a difference a blanket can make to a person, but when they don’t have one, it means everything,” Dr. Aggarwal said.
Dr. Aggarwal is survived by his loving wife, Dr. Rajee Paul, a family physician on Merritt Island.
